Dalibor

The popular Smetana’s opera Dalibor came after the Brandenburgers in Bohemia and the Bartered Bride. In an idealised form the authors tell a story from the historical chronicles of the knight Dalibor of Kozojedy, who had been unjustly convicted and imprisoned in a tower at the Prague Castle, which had been later named after him – Daliborka.

Description

ABOUT THE EVENT

The popular Smetana’s opera Dalibor came after the Brandenburgers in Bohemia and the Bartered Bride. In an idealised form the authors tell a story from the historical chronicles of the knight Dalibor of Kozojedy, who had been unjustly convicted and imprisoned in a tower at the Prague Castle, which had been later named after him – Daliborka.

The accuser in the case, Milada z Ploškovic, visits Dalibor in his prison undercover, disguised as a boy. Moved by Dalibor’s manly defence before king Vladislav, she decides to save the convicted knight. However, the plotted escape is betrayed and the knight dies under the sword of Budivoj, commander of the royal guards, moments after Milada who had lost her life in the vain fight for freeing her loved one.

Smetana’s Dalibor belongs to the golden fund of Czech opera and regularly returns to the repertoire of every Czech opera house.
