SLOVAK NATIONAL THEATRE, Bratislava
The production is based on the literary work of Slovak writer and journalist Dominik Tatarka. His recurring literary protagonist, Bartolomej Slzička, first appears as a student in Paris in 1938, just after the Munich Agreement, then as a celebrated writer in the Czechoslovak Palace of Culture in 1956, and then as a persecuted dissident during the era of normalisation in the 1970s. The production uses allegorical and dreamlike elements in a humorous and original way. However, it also asks whether the freedom we enjoy today is the same as that imagined and longed for by Tatarka.
